Gardener ignores the laws of nature!

Anyone else here a Jeb Gardener fan? That's where I borrowed the title from--call it an homage to my favorite hydroponics gardener. I thought it was fitting because, like Jeb, I don't like to follow "the rules" too much with my hydroponics growing, instead preferring to "wing it" and use my tacit gardening knowledge to help me along. It doesn't always work, but I've had mostly successes!

Pictured here are three tomato plants (Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds variety called Tom Thumb tomato) and a nasturtium plant that went on to have dozens if not hundreds of gorgeous, edible orange flowers. Can't remember the exact variety of nasturtium. This is in a 6-pod classic model--and honestly, I often pack twice as many plants into the same space without much trouble.

I think nasturtium is a really underrated plant to grow in general, but especially if you're trying to "max out" how much food you can grow in your Aerogarden. The leaves, flowers, and seed pods are edible, and the seed pods can be turned into mock capers.

Nasturtium is both one of the easiest flowers and one of the easiest edible plants to grow, suitable for even children planting their first seed. It loves lots of moisture and needs almost nothing in terms of nutrients, so you can actually grow it pretty big without stealing too mamy nutrients from other plants. This one went on to be about 4 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet even as the tomato plants thrived.

At the time of this photo, I counted over 80 full-size cherry tomatoes between the 3 plants, and they went on to produce for several more months alongside the nasturtium. I believe these plants lasted 10 months before I ripped them out. I eventually added a basil plant (well, two basil plants side-by-side, which is a must for me even in the AG). They did surprisingly well, but I didn't take pictures.

Also, quick note, I usually cover the unused holes with more than the domes--not sure why I didn't here.

Like Jeb, I am more inclined to experiment and try to push the limits of my setup far beyond what is typically suggested, and when it works it's very rewarding! Hope you enjoy.
