Gas or electric

I know I'm late in the game, but I also was debating gas v electric. I eventually bought a gas mower. I thought I'd share why.

Electric is making amazing inroads, they are very feasible for a lot of people. I have a .27 acre lot, so it's well within the realm of an electric mower. I elected to get a gas mower for the following reasons.

  • You must keep the lawn mowed consistently, if you let the it grow longer by a few inches you may really struggle using an electric mower. This can easily happen because of weather, sickness, excessive work hours, what have you. Last year 3 times we had days of rain in warm weather, the grass grew rapidly to 6"+ and stayed wet for days.

  • If you use your mower for more than just grass, an electric may not suit you. I've got 3 large trees on my lot and the neighbors also have large trees. I hate raking leaves and it's costly to get rid of them where I live, so I go out 4-6 times in the fall and mulch them with my mower. This would just nor be possible with an electric mower. I also chop up my hedge trimmings and light tree trimmings, again, not possible with electric.

  • I've got time constraint issues, I work long hours and also need to get exercise time in to keep my health up. I simply don't want that exercise to come through pushing around a mower. I prefer to ride my bike. There are many nights I need to blitz the lawn in order to have time to ride. I'm afraid an electric mower just didn't have the chops to mow quickly enough so I can get out and ride with enough time left in the day.
