GATE and an Idealistic Nationalistic Japan

I don't like being drawn into politics. But it uneases me that the political situation in Asia is some sort of fantasy scenario for some people (like a video game), as if war with China, Russia or North Korea is inevitable.

For GATE, I really don't think we can draw many parallels from this adaption. Especially as it's been toned down and restructured to appeal to audiences. Audiences which aren't exactly at the forefront of Japanese public discourse (anime fans). Just because it's easier to connect the dots doesn't mean it should necessarily be taken as a turning point. It's a work of fiction influenced by the ideals of one author. My favourite novel for example is "Starship Troopers" (Nothing like the movie) it's been critiqued as a fascist view on a totalitarian militaristic society from an American author in the 60s.

I didn't interpret it the same way. I just thought it was cool that it influenced most modern military sci-fi (Starcraft, Halo). Maybe Heinlein would roll in his grave if he knew that, or maybe he'd be satisfied that I enjoyed the read and that it got me thinking. I feel similarly about GATE, as someone who has a bit more invested than the average Western fan (born in Asia).

As a discussion point it's interesting and holds value for those unaware of the political situation in the East, but I'd urge people not to take GATE seriously as a starting point for that discussion (What Japan can become). Modern politics in Asia can be summed up as a game of chicken/war of words. Perhaps too light a term for the loss of life over the past century. But it's just that, no one desires war. It's not something to be taken lightly, even for speculation on the Internet for fun. It's a difficult topic, and I commend OP for an interesting read, even if I disagree with the significance of Japan's future identity in relation to Asian politics.

But, apart from that I'll just keep enjoying GATE every week. They've really turned it around in recent weeks and hit their stride (the fine line of what they can/cannot/want to adapt), so it's been a lot of fun to watch, looking forward to this weeks episode as well.
