Gay Science: Which edition to buy?

How to pop your tzscherry?

It's a great work, but I don't know if it's where I would start reading Nietzsche. It is a mid-period work, that's probably the mood that is nearest suited to the modern sensibility. By this time N has moved out from Wagner's influence; he has discovered the joys of Southern Europe, but he had not yet confronted the malaise that underlies the modern Europeans. By 'joyful' science, he means a science appropriate to the Art of living. It's Nietzsche on a fine summer's day at the seaside. Always avoid the most popular recommendation; it is the things that set us apart from our friends that allow us to make something of each other.

I suggest you go for the one with the cover you like best.
As an older reader I prefer my perfect summer's days to be tempered with some spring breezes - the lesser known 'Morgenröthe' often has an attractive rosy fingeredness in its reds. It'll live on your shelves for years, it will form accretions. Keep bright colours in the shadows otherwise they will fade, you could think of of it as a philosopher's tattoo ;)
