The only thing that helps is managing expectations. You will never sound like your favorite bands with entry level equipment and pedals. Even if you had a kickass Mesa Mark V combo amp right now, bands not only use high end gear, they also record and play live with state-of-the-art compression and a setups.
After managing expectations, try to get the best sound you can with what you have (and can afford). First do it at bedroom levels (and take a picture of your settings). Then do it at open places, classrooms etc. Take not of all your settings and tweak those around to find your sound. With time you will grow comfortable with your own tone and be able to expand it periodically.
