Gender bias in The Children’s Society

I don't think this is a hill to die on. These are separate issues. 22% of girls are self harming. Of all girls. That's a huge number.

Yes boys commit suicide twice as often but not anywhere close to 1 in 4 boys.

That's not to say that both aren't important issues but it does nothing to help our movement to try and shit on a very real problem.

To those who think self harm is for attention seeking or whatever can fuck off, and even if it is it is still a serious issue that needs to be tackled. It's an issue that still effects 10% of boys. By ignoring the problem you throw those boys under the bus.

The suicide rate is 1 in 10,000 in the UK. So there are 100 boys self harming for every suicide. By reducing that we can potentially reduce both.

I understand often people here feel hard done by the fact that because this is a girls issues people have sat up and taken notice but let's keep the movement positive. Don't bring down other people's positive work just because it doesn't focus on our area of interest. Go out and do something.

Defend against attacks that boys or men are the reason by all means but let's not shit on something trying to help people. Use the fact that while girls are more likely to externalise their pain while boys are more likely to hold in until they go all out, to show that everyone is suffering and things need to change in general.
