General Discussion - April 3rd

Oh, man. Do I have a story for you.

I roll up to the tournament with my Black Lantern team ready to go. Scenario is 400 pts, anything goes. We're all hanging out shooting the shit, talking about Tuesday's episode of Flash and how one guy just got engaged, when Steve rolls up. Now, for all the crap I talk about, Steve is actually a good person. Very nice, very easy to talk to. That is, until we start discussing the teams we brought, and he starts describing his.

The moment he starts talking, we all recognize this team. It's a variant on the team he brought to a qualifier a few weeks ago. Extremely competitive. It consists of: Proxima Midnight, Sarah Rainmaker, Gates, Captain Marvel (prime) and Harley Quinn from Flash, plus the Indigo battery, ring, and constructs. Captain Marvel gives everyone a 19 defense, Gates gives ideal mobility, Indigo constructs force the opponent to get close (and then Gates runs away), while Proxima and Sarah fire at will. Hypercompetitive to say the least. And he gleefully described how it all worked and how much he enjoys playing it (i.e., winning with it).

The rest of us groan and roll our eyes and, once the roll offs to set matchups are done, express our condolences to the guy matched up to play Steve. We pick player 1, set up our maps and figures, and place objects. The judge asks if everyone's ready, and just before he's about to call for player 1 to begin, declares "April Fools! Everyone switch teams!"

We play the first two rounds with other people's teams, and Steve lost in the first round. Meanwhile, I win all three of my games (although the first one was down to a roll off, unfortunately, because no one killed anyone). Words cannot describe how happy I was when Steve's hypercompetitive team was ripped away from him. And next week's tournament scenario (no figures over 50 points) isn't too conducive to power gaming either. So yeah, good tournament this week.
