General Discussion - September 03

Was in Cambodia for a month, in particular Phnom Penh. There's not a lot of interesting clothing stores but a lot of western goods that come from the local factories in Cambodia and Vietnam, which you can purchase at markets and in anonymous unbranded shops for cheap. It was kind of interesting to see what they had, and how similar they looked lined up together: quality of construction, fabric, etc. Items tended to cost $10-20 for pants, shirts, shoes--anything, really.

So the brands that you would see all piled together in these stores indiscriminately were: Scotch & Soda, Under Armor, H&M, Zara, Massimo Dutti, Express, All Saints, Pull&Bear, Lee, Levi's, Banana Republic, Adidas, Nike, Hugo Boss, Lacoste, Abercrombie.

I looked around quite a bit but none of the fast fashion stuff called to me. The only thing I ended up buying from these pseudo-legal factory outlets was a Herschel backpack ($12), which I needed for gifts I was bringing back. Also got a locally made linen shirt I liked, plus a pair of pants by Beams/Cat's Paw which I found at a used Japanese clothing store. I know some tourists really stock up on mall brands but they really felt quite cheap, especially in that scenario of seeing them all piled together, and I felt pretty good just getting a couple higher quality things I quite liked.
