General election 2015: Huge win for PAP signals stasis - Alex Au aka yawning bread

It's clear that the vast majority of voters seriously don't give a fuck what the PAP is going to do, since they basically had no manifesto or concrete plans and asked for a blank check which they got.

I think that's interesting, because you are still adopting a very western approach of of voting based on policy inclinations, rather than competency or parties.

But here's the thing, how far can policies guide us in our voting choices? I did that electionaire website for a few questions, and this is the conclusion I came to: that method of voting just didn't make sense for me. Take for example immigration. I don't want Singapore to get flooded with immigrants to the extent that our singaporean identity is destroyed. I don't want us to lag behind other economies simply because our policies are unnecessarily restrictive. But in between these two extremes there are fifty shades of grey; where do we draw the balance? I just don't feel confident putting my votes in parties just endlessly parroting anti-foreigner sentiments. It just doesn't seem like that straightforward a matter.

Take for example the SDP's policy of 40% defence reduction. That's concrete for sure. But it just feels massively arrogant for a party, without any knowledge on the ground of what our army needs to declare that 40% of the budget can be eliminated. That doesn't inspire any confidence in me either.

So honestly? For me it fell to a matter of character. I didn't really give a shit what people said about sim ann. Since she's my mp, in between judging her based on one speech and what she's done over the last few years for my constituency, Im perfectly entitled to choose the latter.

I'll be honest though, I'm getting tired as fuck having people repeatedly tell me how I didn't put any thought in my choices and just mindlessly chose the incumbent.
