The geniuses of the Daily Sun Opinion page have outdone themselves with this one.

There are only so many counselors Cornell Health can house, so many cliched “Thrive” cards they can print, so much an institution can do to support us as we learn to know ourselves.

This is what I found condescending. It dismisses counseling as a stopgap and reduces what professional help actually does. Mental health is not inherently an issue of self-actualization, it’s a medical problem - something the author glosses over. Here are some other things I took issue with:

Two, and this one really stuck, that even in crisis, no external figure should strip from an individual the autonomy to make the final call on the shape of their safety plan and the nature of the help they need.

This is a false statement that makes it obvious this person has never had a real mental health crisis. Someone having a mental health crisis, by definition, is not able to make calls on their well being. For example, if you are truly suicidal then you will attempt to reject anything stopping you from hurting yourself.

Does the decision to address the oversubscription of professional mental health services by increasing them also unintentionally narrow our understanding of our widest set of options?

Only for people who don’t actually need therapy. Again, if you have severe issues professional help is the only option. She comes off as one of those people who thinks a healthy diet and regular exercise can alone cure major depression. It’s a huge step in the right direction for sure and something everyone should be doing, but not enough in itself.
