Gentlemen of AskMen, what would you say to the younger chaps of AskMen?

  • Start to dress better. More button downs/oxfords in lieu of t shirts, proper fitting pants, wear shoes other than sneakers, etc.
  • Unless you can actually get a full 5 o'clock shadow within 12-24 hours of shaving, you probably can't grow facial hair that looks decent. I see far too ~18 to early 20's guys who try to grow out/rock facial hair when it looks like shit.
  • Get into a hobby that involves physical activity--Tennis, Swimming, Golf, Rock Climbing, Kayaking, etc. Your metabolism will slow down when you get older (mid-20's for me) and it's nice to have a hobby that's enjoyable but still helps you burn calories.
  • Learn to cook a wide variety of foods. I'm surprised how many guys in their 20's can't/won't cook beyond grilling meat, basic potato recipes, pasta, and maybe steamed vegetables. It will keep you healthy and most women love it when a guy is skilled in the kitchen.
  • Don't be an idiot, financially. When my friends from college and I all graduated and landed our first "career" jobs, I couldn't believe some of their spending habits. New cars on a 6 year loan, nicer apartment than necessary, eating out/going for out for a few bears almost daily-- the list goes on. You should certainly spend some money on yourself, but think about it.
  • Regarding things like Pot/alcohol, it's better that you start toning that stuff down when you're out of college/nearing your mid 20's. You don't need to give it up entirely, but getting tanked regularly and getting stoned everyday isn't the best image for a 25 year old.
