Genuine opinions on studying in Shenzhen or HK?

  • Hong Kong has lots of critics these days, but if you're from the outside and come in, it's a fun city, and very different from what you can experience in Europe
  • If you have a foot in HK, you can probably find a way to stay and salaries are not like at home: I was paid 2000 euros as a software engineer in Paris, I'm paid 11 000 euros now, and I work less. That's a big factor for me to tolerate the mild retardation of politics here, but some people are more idealist.
  • It's very diverse, and locals are now looking away from China so they'll be mostly nice, I think it's potentially different in Shenzhen
  • Shenzhen has a bad reputation here, the friction is heavy I think for everything, and as a foreigner you're auto suspicious. It's not (yet) the case in HK
  • Having started in HK can open doors in Singapore, Australia or Japan, but those countries are notoriously harder to enter and make a living in.
