Yeah, although I think there were a lot of nuances between western countries.

E.g. France always had a focus on nuclear energy, and many people even have electrical heating. (Which also has some downsides.) Germany, just for its size and reliance on gas had an extra big incentive to be a bit gullible towards Russia.

Until 2014 I could maybe have conceived of a world in which the approach of trade with Russia could have turned out as the right one. After that… well… it would really have been time to get LNG terminals ready, diversify suppliers and ramp up renewables to a much higher extent.

The far left and the far right never had much say here, and that‘s great. So they are not really such a big concern. If anything, they make the reasonable parties be more willing to stick together on the big issues since the war started.
