Getting my PS4 on Thursday! What are some things I should/need to know?

Hold down the PS button (while the console is turned on) and go to change device settings. Lower your light bar to "Dim", this helps with your DS4's battery life. You can also change the volume on the controller's speaker.

Don't forget to add each month's free PS+ game, even if you don't think you'll play it. You don't even need to have them downloaded and take up hard drive space, you can simply just add them to your library and DL them later at any time you want, as long as your PS+ account is still active.

Make sure you have enough space surrounding all sides around your PS4 so it can "breathe" well. Keeping it in a cramped environment can lead to overheating issues down the road.

Look into BestBuy's gamer's unlocked club, it's $30 for two years but you save 20% on all new video game purchases on all consoles. I know some people hate BestBuy with a burning passion but I'm willing to put aside my hatred for that 20% discount. After 3 PS4 games, it pays for itself in savings. (If you want, you can also hook up your friends with discounts too, making it that much easier to convince them to pick you a game you'd like to play online with a friend.) The GCU also stacks on top of sales they're having so for the upcoming black friday sales, you'll be saving a nice chunk of money.

I personally leave my PS4 in rest mode 100% of the time I'm not using it. The only time I 100% power it down is when I leave for a few days. I like using rest mode because it allows me to just pause the game, put it into rest mode and boot it back up later and instantly resume whatever I was doing earlier. Not only will it also charge your controller if you plug it in, the best part is being at work, purchasing a game through the online PS Store and having it sent and downloaded to my console at home so I can jump right into my new game as soon as I walk in the door.
