Getting a second job - do I need to do anything?

So there are a couple of things to know about the tax free allowance: 1. The annual allowance is £12,570 - if you earn less than this in the fiscal year you don’t pay any tax. 2. If you are paid weekly and taxed under PAYE (pay as you earn) then it will be looked at as a weekly tax free allowance ( 12,570 / 52 = £245)

Your weekend job is earning you c. £8,400 per year or £142 per week, comfortably below the allowance so no tax worries.

Your internship (congratulations btw!) will give you another £1,100 annually, and £285 for each of the 4 weeks.

So during your internship period you’ll be earning £285 + £142 = £427 per week. This is over the £245 tax free allowance, and you be taxed on the £182 you’re earning over. You shouldn’t have to worry about setting this up, HMRC and the payroll department at the company you’re working for will do it.

However at the end of the year you’re forecasting to have earned £9,500 in total from your weekend job and the internship - less than. the allowance, so HMRC should give you a tax rebate for any tax you paid.

If you do get another job after the internship and you end up earning more than £12,570 in the year then obviously you won’t get any rebate.

I hope that helps, and good luck with the internship!
