Is getting a software internship as first internship a good idea?

Thank you for the advice. I was wondering if you could also provide your take on something my parents have been telling me:

I am aware that software careers tend to be more lucrative than hardware careers these days. However, my parents have the view that hardware engineering is still a better career because it is a rarer skillset, and that I would enjoy a more productive career compared to the "oversaturated" software engineering. Essentially, they think I should pursue a blue ocean strategy by going into hardware instead of software. They also think that hardware engineering is a safer career because it is more "grounded in the physical sciences," whereas they consider SWE to be too far removed from the natural sciences to have much specialization.

I have my personal academic interests, but I want to ask you only about the pragmatic aspects of hardware vs. software careers. Do you think my parents are correct, that hardware is overall a safer and more valuable background than software?
