Girl playing basketball impaled in stomach by fieldhouse court.(Video)

Let me guess, likely a Catholic school?

When I was in 4th grade I went to a Catholic school. Our gym was shit. The floors were tile but after years of polishing and maintaining they had eroded into thin laminate pieces that were dusty due to then deteriorating. Multiple issues with people slipping during gym class due to the dust or tiles just separating off the floor. They would just glue them down. The only solution they were willing to entertain was to just polish and clean the floors twice a day.

Capture the half was a class favorite. This day was capture the flag day and boy was I pumped. I was always a fast runner so my team gave me the job of trying to get the flag by sprinting down the side of the gym then cutting in for the flag. I don't remember much of the day and I remember nothing about the 4 hours previous to this incident. All I know is from the gym teacher. I got a good head of steam and was about to cut into the other team's side when a tile ripped of the floor right as I cut. There were bleachers on the sides and my momentum took me sideways into them. I hit full force into the bleachers with the right side of my ribs. The force of hitting the bleachers threw me backwards into the gym floor. With my head smacking squarely on the back. Like when you fall and your head snaps into the ground.

I ended up having a multiple seizures before I regained consciousness. When I did I was unaware of where I was and I was uncontrollably vomiting. Rushed to the hospital. I was kept overnight to be monitored for brain swelling and bleeding. I ended up with a severe concussion, they said hairline skull fracture, and broke 6 ribs and ruptured all the cartilage in my ribs. Had to go to the doctors for follow up tests to see if there was any cognitive damage. Recovering from the concussion took forever. I distinctly remember feeling like I had tunnel vision for a year. I also heard voices as an echo at times.

Shockingly we knew very little about concussions and their severity back then because years later nobody found an issue with allowing me to play football this sustaining repeated concussions.
