Hey man, I've been depressed as well and I got through it without pills.

Here's some alternate treatments.

Exercise

This is one of the best treatments for depression, because not only does it make you healthier, but it focuses the mind, and releases endorphins. Starting an exercise routine is the only hard part, but once you get the momentum it pays for itself. Easy way to do something like this is by joining a social club of your favourite sport. This is also a Great way to meet people. Here's some good ones to look in to.

- Social soccer. Non competitive, fun, and gets you fitter. Team building too, so you will make friends easily. It's also cheap.

- Social netball. Same reasons.

- Rock climbing. A bit more expensive but will introduce you to a long term hobby. Making friends at a rock climbing gym will open up opportunities for road trips out to climbing spots. Always fun.

- Boxing or another martial art. Will get you crazy fit, and because its badass you will have another interesting thing to make a point of conversation. This one is less social, but you'll still have opportunities to meet new people.

- Yoga. Amazing for your health and mind. Easy enough to pick up. Great way to develop a daily routine of fitness. Also good for meeting women, however this shouldn't be your priority for going.

- Kayaking. This is the most expensive option, but it is a good way to get active and see sights. This can be both solitary and social, and is a good workout that is so much fun you'll forget you were getting in amazing shape doing it.

If social things can be difficult for you, then get a gym membership and gym by yourself. This will be the hardest to get into, but it is more than worth it. You'll look amazing and feel amazing. Or, for a much cheaper price, go for runs. They clear the mind, almost like meditation. Swimming is also cheap and good for this.

Creative Projects

Working on something that requires developing skill and generating an end product is highly rewarding and makes getting up each day easier as you find yourself looking forward to completing it. Obviously you won't be good at these things right away, but that's what makes them so much better. It's that you can learn these things and eventually become great at them.

- Writing learn how to write, then you could write a film, a novel, a comic book, etc. Even if its bad, you've still completed something and started learning a valuable skill.

- Visual art. Painting, moulding, sketching and what not are all very therapeutic.

- Music. if you can already play something, start learning more songs or writing your own. If you can't, start learning an instrument. If you're worried about the difficulty of learning a new instrument, I recommend the drums or the guitar. Easy to pick up simple songs, and you feel like a rock star even when your just playing rock beat 1, or Wonderwall.

- Cooking. Learning how to cook awesome meals isn't just impressive, its goddamn rewarding and you'll get to eat well every night.

Social Hobbies

- Dungeons and Dragons. Super nerdy, yes... Waste of time? No. It develops creativity, and working on a character or a campaign and reaching milestones is super fun and can make you look forward to something every week/month, depending on how often you play. This may not be your thing, but if you like gaming, I don't see how it wouldn't be. It is also very social and some of my best friends now, I have met through DnD.

- Educational Courses. You could learn a language, an instrument, learn how to make coffee, cook, draw, anything. Good way to meet people and pick up a cool new skill.

Travel

This is the most expensive option, unfortunately. But travel doesn't just mean a big trip round Europe. It could be as simple as a day trip hiking a route you didn't even know was in your home city.

It's easy to get into a depressed and low energy routine, but its just as easy to get out of it. The hardest part is just making the change. Good luck and I hope my advice helps you the same way it helped me.
