Girls sue to block participation of transgender athletes

You know, I really just don’t understand why this is headline news. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s incredibly unfair and don’t think it should be allowed. However, I really don’t get why we’re suddenly up-in-arms about this specific physical advantage in sports when they’ve always existed. I mean, a tall guy is going to beat out a short guy in basketball almost every time. A 350lb defensive lineman is going to beat out the opposing 275lb lineman every time. Isn’t that just as much of a biological advantage as this? In wrestling they address this by having weight classes, but we don’t have separate basketball leagues for people to all be of similar height. It sucks these kids are missing out on scholarships because of simple physicality, but they could have the same thing happen with someone of the same gender who was a foot taller.

Also, this is something that affects a microcosm of the country. Only 0.6% of the US identifies as trans, but only a fraction of that actually transition, and only a fraction of that transition before 18, an even smaller fraction who play on sports teams, and even a smaller fraction of that have exceptional athletic talent. I’m sure you could fit the entirety of US trans kids dominating highschool sports in a small gymnasium. This is just such an extremely rare issue to have it be part of national conversation. I mean, you have a higher chance of dying in a car crash on the way to the game than you do of actually seeing a trans person participating.

I definitely think something needs to be done to level the playing field out, but I feel like that can be handled at the local level and doesn’t need to be part of national conversation. I think because it centers around the currently hot-button issue of transgenderism we all care so much.
