The basic answer: "Yes."

The related story: Native English-speaking American. My foreign language exposure started with French, moved on to Japanese and Chinese in high school and settled into Korean in college. At this point I speak conversationally fluent Korean. Because I enjoy speaking Korean and feel comfortable with it (and in fact uncomfortable without it - as a summer stay in a rural area told me), I was hoping to meet/date/marry a Korean guy.

Alas, no one ever turned up. And now my fiancee is Chinese. Every single person who knew me was quite shocked by that twist of events. But it's also not like I had no Chinese language experience before and I'm working to improve my Chinese now with my future family speaking almost no English.
