In the 80s, not long after graduating boot camp. A group of us went to the base gym. The gym had installed a pair of rowing machines, each had a monitor and the two were linked. The draw for us was the ability to race. Me, being young and dumb, had no concept of self preservation, subscribing to winning is all. We made a double elimination tournament bracket to race by. I wasn't the best or strongest, but I wouldn't give up. I didn't win, placed middle of our pack. Here is where the dumb appears in earnest. I recall standing in the group, watching a semi-final race when the exertion caught up with me. Everything started to go yellow, I grabbed the arm of the person next to me. Next thing I remember is the horrible odor of smelling salts. Seems I passed out, almost pulling another with me. A quick check from medical said I was alright, just went far beyond what I should have. A stinky lesson in pride.
