God the Sustainer?

" With creation, God does not abandon his creatures to themselves. He not only gives them being and existence but also, and at every moment, upholds and sustains them in being, enables them to act and brings them to their final end. Recognizing this utter dependence with respect to the Creator is a source of wisdom and freedom, of joy and confidence." - Catechism of the Catholic Church

Scriptural "Support" (Quotations used because said support can easily be a result of proof-texting and not following the context or taking into account the history of said scripture).

--- John 5:17: My Father works until now and I work. (Augustine comments "Let us, therefore, believe that God works constantly, so that all created things would perish, if his working were withdrawn." Though this seems to discount the context) Hebrews 1:3: He upholds all things by the word of his power. Psalm 54:4 Surely God is my help; the Lord is the one who sustains me. Acts 17:28 For in him we live and move and have our being. ---

A universally accepted doctrine, the idea that God moment by moment sustains the universe (or creation) goes unopposed. Whether this is due to a lack of development or not is unknown. However, I would like to posit a question to Theist and Atheist alike. What if God created a self-sustaining universe? Why has this idea not even been remotely entertained? Finally, why is it that most who are followers of the Abrahamic monotheistic religious system give the idea, not a single thought.

My hope for this conversation is to have an insightful discussion that I personally believe has not been given nearly enough attention beyond affirming out of necessity.
