Good article explaining the Ronaldo Saga

REAL Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane broke off his holiday to call Cristiano Ronaldo in a bid to persuade his unsettled star not to quit the club, Spanish sports daily Marca claimed on Sunday.

Ronaldo, on Confederations Cup duty in Russia with Portugal, who drew 2-2 with Mexico to open their campaign, is reportedly furious over a tax probe into the off shore accounts dealing with his image rights, and has reportedly vowed to leave Spain.

The latest developments from the UK are mixed. The tabloids suggest that Manchester United are preparing their bid, although Sky Sports says “at the moment, United are wary of being drawn into a transfer saga surrounding Ronaldo’s future and the general feeling at Old Trafford is that he will stay in Madrid”.

However, The Mirror has declared United will “go all out to land” CR7, via a £175million deal (AUD $293.25m) PLUS David De Gea!

The goalkeeper has long been pursued by Real Madrid, and after finally looking like his future was in the Premier League, he may be used as a makeweight to get former United winger Ronaldo back home.

That won’t, reportedly, preclude Old Trafford heavies chasing Alvaro Morata, either, and the pursuit of the Spanish striker will remain a separate deal - although Chelsea remain a distraction in the negotiations.

A Bola, the paper that broke the initial story, have declared overnight that Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes has been instructed to do “whatever it takes” to seal a return to the Premier League.

Meanwhile, The Daily Express adds that Roman Abramovich is also loitering curiously, ready to launch a “shock move” for Ronaldo under Manchester United’s nose as the greatest demonstration to Antonio Conte that he has his backing to spend in the transfer market. The Sky Sports report adds: “Ronaldo is interested in the possibility of returning to Manchester United this summer, Sky sources understand.

“The Real Madrid forward wants to leave Spain and a source close to the player says United are very close to his heart.

“Manchester United sold Ronaldo to Real Madrid in the summer of 2009 for £80m and they have tried to set up a deal for his return on at least one occasion since his departure....

“Ronaldo’s advisers, though, have been told to find him a new club outside Spain because he is angry after being accused of evading tax of 14.7m euros (£13m) between 2011 and 2014.

There are very few clubs who would be able to afford Ronaldo’s transfer fee and his wages.”

Marca claim Ronaldo told his Portuguese colleagues: “I am leaving Real Madrid.

“I have made a decision. There is no turning back,” the daily sports paper reported. According to Marca when Zidane heard Ronaldo had sworn to quit he broke off from his family holiday and called his No7 to tell him Madrid “needed him for his goals, and also his winning mentality”.

Marca also reported that club captain Sergio Ramos had called Ronaldo to ask him to stay.

In just 265 games for Real Madrid Ronaldo has scored 285 goals, winning three Champions League finals in four seasons.
