You hit the nail on the head. It's a cultural thing going back to the Revolutionary War. Guns are here to stay but I agree it should be harder to get one. People love to laugh at the idea of militias rising up and facing off against the American military but it's not so clear cut. The government wouldn't roll in tanks and drones and level cities containing militias and countless of their own civilians. Everybody, including many active duty, would despise the government for this. Also, from what I see, many in the military are conservative and might not even follow orders if it involved killing people of their own beliefs. There would likely be many defectors, and as American deaths rose, so would defectors. I just don't see the scenario of rednecks shooting at tanks with shotguns and semi auto rifles. It's funny to picture but unrealistic.
