Good News: Atheist nurse wins fight to end mandatory 12-step addiction treatment for health staff in Vancouver | CBC

This hits really close to home. I was addicted to cocaine when I went to my first rehab and I hated the religious undertones of the 12 step programs. I decided it wasn’t for me and waiting until I could get back on my own again and start using. I only got more of the same from treatment and I got addicted to heroin. It was actually a good thing because it lead me to methadone clinics. They never preached about god they just said if you play by our rules we will make sure you aren’t a slave to heroin and I even gradually went down and then went cold turkey.

I didn’t listen to the 12 steps program and the though that I can never take drugs again. I went cold turkey off methadone after they had reduced my dose. I only use soft drugs now and my life is better than I could have imagined even if I was never an addict.
