good wizard spells?

Level 1:

  • Chill Fog: Stupid strong, gets better when you get Secrets of Rime (Cold Damage talent) and blinds every tick and blind is one of the strongest debuffs in the game
  • Slicken: A simple disable, works well all game
  • Eldritch Aim: More important as the game goes on but good early as well, makes your spells hit more reliably
  • Minoletta's Minor Missiles: Crap early game but later on when you have a lot of level 1 spells to mess around with, it's great to spam at a mob you just want to die as with good aim, it does a lot of damage
  • Fan of Flames: Just a good solid nuke with a large party friendly area which makes it easy to land safely.
  • Concelhaut's Parasitic Staff: Disgustingly good weapon most people overlook, this will make your wizard hit harder than most other party members outside of a rogue and it's a reach weapon so it's safer to use

Level 2

  • Bewildering Spectacle: Confusion is strong, suffers from a rather small aoe but if it lands well, it'll make fights trivial
  • Binding Web: Stuck is excellent vs melee
  • Infuse with Vital Essence: More important late game, the extra health and endurance can help you survive tough fights
  • Merciless Gaze: Makes you crit more, it's good
  • Miasma of Dull Mindedness: a spell that removes a whopping 20 stats including resolve which is responsible for a lot of defense, overlooked and powerful
  • Necrotic Lance: Get good aim so this lands and it does very high damage for a level 2 spell
  • Ray of Fire: More difficult to use but if properly executed, very high damage to multiple mobs

Level 3:

  • Expose Vulnerability: Good at removing defense, mandatory on some Potd fights
  • Deleterious Alacrity of Motion: Haste basically, it's very strong and lets you piss your entire grimoire at the enemy very fast if you need to
  • Kalakoth's Minor Blights: Does insane damage since it is aoe and hits for between 30-50 depending on crits while also applying blast, it's so so strong it makes all the other damage spells at this level fairly redundant
  • Crackling Bolt: Of the damage spells this level, I'd say this is the best as it does the most damage and can potentially bounce back when hitting walls to do damage a second or even third time
  • Llengrath's Displaced Image: This is actually a decent defensive spell since it doesn't wear off after being hit once and it helps you avoid aoe spells due to the increased reflex save

Level 4

  • Pull of Eora: Dumb spell, cast this in the middle of a pack and stick all your aoe on top of it and laugh at the simplicity of combat
  • Wall of Fire: Damage might not seem high but the important thing is that it ticks very fast and with decent interrupt, mobs will just sit there doing nothing due to being interrupted all the time. Damage is respectable as well
  • Confusion: Same as level 2 just a bigger area and longer lasting, strong debuff
  • Essential Phantom: An excellent source of dps and another target for mobs to focus rather than your wizard. Spoiler below
  • [Spoiler](Ninagauth's Shadowflame: This spell is just flat out dumb. Fireball that does cold damage and paralyses for 10+ seconds? Trivialises combat. It only appears in one grimoire in the world and it's hidden, good luck finding it!)

Level 5

  • Malignant Cloud: Great aoe damage which is raw so difficult to resist. Bear in mind it is a poison effect so mobs immune to poison like undead or Earth Blights are immune to it
  • Citzal's Spirit Lance: A disgustingly strong weapon which puts other melee classes to shame. Buff with aim and crit, cast this and go to town.
  • Wall of Force: Similar to Wall of Fire, it's good damage and hobbles. It's also party friendly so a good option

Level 6:

  • Gaze of the Adragon: Super strong spell, petrify is the strongest debuff in the game as it paralyses mobs and causes them to take 100% increased damage.
  • Citzal's Martial Power: In combination with the level 5 spell, this makes stuff die, fast.
  • Minoletta's Precisely Piercing Burst: Great aoe damage spell that's party friendly. If you need heavy aoe damage quickly, use this.
  • Arkemyr's Capricious Hex: I'll mention this since if you are lucky and roll paralyse, you win the fight. If you roll dazed or sickened, it's a complete waste of a cast.
  • Arcane Reflection: Very strong during some fights as it makes you immune to a lot of spells and reflects them back at the target.

Level 7

  • Substantial Phantom: Pure upgrade over level 4, gains a few useful spells and has the same auto attack.
  • Tayn's Chaotic Orb: Probably the only other level 7 spell worth casting, it can do a lot of damage if it bounces between just two or three mobs and the debuffs are decent enough

Just as a note, Level 7 is fairly lack luster for a wizard, not many of the spells are particularly strong apart from, another spoiler:

  • [Spoiler](Concelhaunt's Crushing Doom: Gained from a powerful mage in the game, it only appears in his grimoire. Supremely powerful spell which is pretty much the only level 7 spell you'll cast when you get it

Level 8

Another fairly meh level however * Wall of Many Colours: Pretty good spell if the enemy runs through it multiple times. The effects are quite varied but do good damage or can inflict strong debuffs. * Kalakoth's Freezing Rake: Not a bad spell, it does nice damage and there's not a lot of competition this level. * Wilting Wind: it does raw damage so worth a mention, it's not amazing but nothing particularly is this level.
