I'm not sure what purely technical point of view you are talking about, but all of the location services work the same way for a reason.

I believe this reason might be different than purely technical. After all, companies like Google make money by spying on people. People who, from my anecdotal experience, at large have no idea how does it all work and what's actually in their dossiers. My way more tech savvy than an average user and from the look of it now, to get some understanding in this field is going to be a great journey for me.

Even on tech message boards such as reddit I struggle to get the answers.
