Google offers Cubans free computer and Internet use

Yeah. As crazy as it sound, computers themselves weren't made legal for everybody to use until 2008. But as of 2012, 25% of the population had personal access to the internet and that's probably higher now. Although that's obviously a step in the right direction, it's still one of the most controlled internets in the world, (all e-mails are monitored, only approved sites are accessible, only approved content is allowed to be posted, etc) On the plus side, there is a pretty big scene of citizens getting around internet restrictions, like government officials renting out their accounts that have a lot more freedom, and people accessing the internet in tourist areas. And the government appears to be trying to increase internet access- right now broadband is being laid down across Cuba and public wifi routers are being set up in public areas... But, according to diplo cables from wikileaks, US officials believe that the Cuban government is more afraid of the likes of the internet and bloggers than they are of traditional dissenters rising up, so it's hard to say whether or not Cuba will continue to liberalize in that area...

But I have a lot of hope for Cuba. Probably more than any other country under that kind of oppressive authoritarian regime. They are on a clear path of liberalization, and that's going to speed up significantly as relations with the US continue to thaw and trade increases. They looked destined to fall after the collapse of the USSR but they eventually adjusted to economic isolation and developed a relatively stable self-sufficient economy, leading to a number of large, modern industries- it surprises a lot of people to learn just how expansive the biotechnology and medicine sectors are in Cuba.

Now that relations with the US are easing, I think they're posed to make massive leaps in progress over the next few decades, as trade increases between them and the US. Not to mention, with such a great education system and a populace with 100% literacy rate, I think they will adapt fast and be able to take advantage of their improving economic situation as the country continues to liberalize. All that considered, I think things have never looked brighter for Cuba. Fingers crossed that the thaw continues and that they don't start to regress after a decade of moving in the right direction
