Google workers announce plans to unionize

Slippery slopes are a logical fallacy... but it's a hell of a path to start down to encourage people to develop unethical and horrifying weapons when they signed up to work on a search engine, because the alternative to terrifying next generation weapons might somehow be even more immoral.

I think a lot of folks who work in new technology development are a little terrified of the work they do being used for something awful. Code I wrote in the early 2000's was used by 50k+ clients. I was super creeped out when when it was used for some pretty unethical porn sites. I was just writing super basic proof of concept code to explain some simple concepts to a coworker and my email and sample code ended up in a knowledge base and then consequently being used to run chibi/lolita hentai and for a particularly gross few minutes, some revenge porn sites. I know a lot of folks who've written code for banal, boring corporate IT gigs and found out later that it's part of China's national firewalls, or been sold to police for facial recognition of protestors, or is being used to map strategic targets in the middle east instead of vegetation near power lines.

Maybe someone else would have developed that stuff. Maybe those problematic or unethical applications would have happened just fine without my code, or the code my friends wrote. But I never agreed to put that shit on my conscience.
