[Gordon] Josh Gordon stepping away from Patriots to focus on mental health

Saying addiction is a decision is like saying someone with depression has a decision.

Addiction is genetically inherited, and is officially classified as a mental illness. Not that it is caused by mental illness, it IS a mental illness.

Addiction expands well beyond illicit drugs, and addiction prone individuals have a chemical makeup that differs from those who are not.

Just as depression can be triggered by an event, addiction is triggered, as well. With Addiction, by the time you realize it, you’re unable to make rational decisions. More than anything, you want to end the addiction (like depressed people want to be happy), but you hit a point where you’re unable to control the chemical reactions in your brain with rationale thought that is causing this suffering. Just like depressed people become overwhelmed and paralyzed by the depressed mind (“I need to do my work” but depressed self decided to lay in bed.) Fortunately, both can be treated. Unfortunately, someone like you will still judge one person suffering from a mental illness differently from another mental illness due to ignorance.
