got approved for PWD now im wondering what medcal devices I can/should try to qualify for?

Hi there. I was on PWD many years ago. I ended up getting to a better place with my mental and physical health and went on to work in the field alongside and all of my clients were on PWD so I did a lot of liaising. I wanted to share info that may help as someone who's been there myself and also as someone who works in the field.

Dental coverage rolls over every 2 years, on odd years. So you currently have $1000, and on Jan 1st, it will roll over (you should call though to be clear on that because sometimes coverage can change out of the blue). Also, while you are only allowed $1000 in dental coverage, if you need more extensive work, Blue Cross (the company the ministry uses) may be able to approve you for more coverage. BUT...the dentist or dental surgeon needs to apply directly to Blue Cross for your coverage on your behalf to apply for the extra coverage before beginning that work. Once you move through your $1000, if you still need extractions or fillings, the dentist can bill it as an emergency using a special form and they'll cover it.

Another note: You can apply to MSP for supplementary benefits. If approved, then when you get your letter it will also inform you that your future ambulance fees will be waived. Some orthotic/podiatry care is covered in this, but it is incredibly limited. You may be able to get some additional coverage under Health Assistance.

You can apply through your myselfserve for clothing allowance each year if you need shoes or something. No guarantee this will be approved, but it might. If you require clothing for more medical reasons, a doctor can write a letter to augment your application. If you apply for the nutritional supplement, a doctor can fill out a form explaining why you need it.

If you don't use public transit, you can receive the transportation supplement on your cheque instead.

Talk to your doctor about the Disability Tax Credit. Your GP or NP can fill out their portion, you fill out yours and send it in to the CRA. If approved, they'll reassess your taxes for the last 5 years and you'll receive any applicable refunds and the ministry won't deduct it. Just report it and make sure to call them to make sure it's processed correctly and not in a way that causes your monthly assistance or $15,000 exemption to be impacted. With the DTC, you can also get a Registered Disability Savings Plan. The government offers yearly grants to help with this, and matches your own contributions. If you call the ministry, they will also have info for you, if they haven't sent it to you already.

If your power goes out due to a storm or someone hitting a pole and your food spoils, you can approach the ministry for a crisis supplement for food. If you need help with utilities due to an unexpected high cost, they can issue a one time crisis supplement for that as well. These can be applied for through MySelfServe.
