Got this from the gas company

I'm going to have to disagree with you for a number of reasons. My father was a hoarder, although this doesn't look like a hoard situation, it's not the moving of objects that get you, it's the fun surprise sharp objects, insects, etc. that do.

Also, if you do it for one house, it sets the precedent that it will be done for all houses. If someone gets a similar letter and says 'but you moved it for John smith my neighbour' but in his case it was a heavier object that could potentially hurt the meter reader.

And finally, if the meter reader does move the object and anything happens to that object where it gets broken/damaged then they may be held accountable. Even if it was broken before they touched it, the homeowner may attribute the damage to the meter reader.

Ultimately, it is the homeowners responsibility to keep the meter clear and free and be able to be read without intervention on the part of the meter reader.
