Got a raise two months ago, now I can bring in a big client and I'd like another raise for it. What's the best way to bring it up?

These guys just don't get it. Bringing in clients is not part of your job description so you're under no obligation to do so. These people are the types that think people should work for free and your only reward for work will be the satisfaction you get from a hard days labor. That's corporate brainwashing 101. Look out for yourself first and never work for free. You should not be doing work that is not your job and doesn't benefit you in any way?

Options:

  1. Take the client on the side under your own business
  2. Forget about it and just continue with your job
  3. Bring in the new client and then bring it up at review/bonus time.

Even if it's stupid to do the work and then hope for a reward, that's the order you have to do it in as an employee at a company. Wait to bring it up at bonus/raise/review time and if they don't reward you start looking for another job.You have to always appear as a loyal employee working solely out of your love of the company. It sucks, but that's how it's done in the corporate world. Even if you don't drink the Kool-Aid you still have to play the game.
