Government closely watching public opinion on asylum seekers, docs show

The problem is that no data will change the optics of it. If you are a legitimate refugee, the US is a safe country with nearly identical societal attitudes and protections. If they then chose leave the US and enter Canada illegally so they can exploit a loophole in the Convention on Refugees, it just looks bad. They're leaving a safe country to enter another safe country. The fact that there is no legal mechanism by which a claim from the US would be approved should tell you something about the way they are making their claims.

Add in the terrible mismanagement by the Federal government (e.g. putting up refugee claimants in hotels and not expediting their processing) and it's impossible for the local populace to feel good about any of this.
