I did tech stuff all my life and had the BCOM on top of it. I would say I could slot in as a mid level software engineer due to skills I picked up when working on my hobbies, however I do not do any programming at work anymore.
When I got hired, it was for a marketing position. I started helping out the software team with the skills I learned in my own time, and eventually it just made sense for me to be on the business side of the engineering department. I could make $150k US or more if I moved to Seattle or SF but I want to stay in Vancouver. My degree didn’t specifically help me past the initial recruiting stage. I am fortunate that my interests aligned with the work I do, and it gave me the opportunity to move upward quickly.
