Graduated B.Comm Students

Graduating with a B.Comm (Honors) this May at 22 years old.

I have a job lined up at a major tech company in California for after I graduate (immigrating to the US). My salary and options, which I will not discuss in public, are very good and significantly above average for Palo Alto/West Bay Area.

What you can do? Pretty much anything anywhere. Aside from competition in the job market, you have a tyranny of choice in regards to which industries you could work in.

Was it a good choice? Yes, it was for me. Accounting/finance classes (required for hons.) sucked, but if you do the work you will do fine in them.

Are they good in the market? As others have said, and my one caveat, is that the largest determinant of this is you. I got my job because I did a metric shitload of footwork in building my own connections and focusing on the industry that I was most interested/engaged by. It also helps I have been self-employed since I was 13 and did private consulting for two years when I hit 18 (stopped because I took my job when I was 20). I have done no clubs or extra curricular activities through my university. I have not had a life, and my grades in university are not as good as they should be, but I did whatever I needed to do to make what I wanted to happen, happen.

In short, the largest factor here is you. Are you willing to do what it takes to get what you want? Are you motivated to work in a specific industry? Are you willing to move/travel to get the best economic opportunities? If yes, then you will have no problems getting a good job after you graduate. Don't depend on university connections and resources because that is a surefire way to get a mediocre, entry level job.

Carve your own path, kick some ass, make reality your bitch, but most of all love what you do and do what you love. Money is worth nothing if you are not happy.
