Great Twitter thread about the Casino "sub-plot" in The Last Jedi

This is one of your most recent comments:

The only culture war in America film is in the media coverage of it, not in movies themselves. For most of my life American movies have been dominated by men, mostly white ones, in the leading role and women (also mostly white) relegated to second tier if they were included at all. They still had messages being pushed by their writers/directors/producers, that's never changed, but now movies are starting to push limits by including non-white people and women in the spotlight more and more frequently. The two movies you mentioned are examples of that. So why the hubbub? Because roughly half of Americans are sad to see that white male hegemony slip and start to become a thing of the past - which leads to the kind of media you're reading and linking to.

America is changing. Maybe for the better, maybe not, but it is changing and certain groups will fight tooth and nail to prolong or prevent that change. That culture war is real and people will use any platform they can to fight it, including commentary on entertainment.
