Grocery shopping

  • ALDI - I never go there since they moved to MLK, as I live on the other side of town. Even when they were on College, I would only go there for specific items they were cheapest on. Now that Walmart price-matches ALDI, I have even less incentive to go there.

  • Sam's Club - Unless you are buying a lot (i.e. you have a lot of people to feed), the occasional savings aren't worth the membership cost. However the liquor store is a separate store, and you don't need a membership to buy there, so if you buy alcohol, it might be worth the trip.

  • Harp’s – typically a bit more expensive than Walmart, but they often have items Walmart doesn’t carry. They also have a butcher, which neither Walmart in Fayetteville has, which can be nice. However they charge significantly more for their meat. Also the one on Mission and Crossover is a joy to shop at, as the staff is very helpful, and they do a great job of managing checkout lines. If I am not in the mood to fight the Walmart/Neighborhood Market crowd, I go there. I believe the Harp’s on College got a makeover recently, and I haven’t been there since, but previously I did not like it as much as the Harps at Mission and Crossover.

  • Neighborhood Market – the one at Mission and Crossover is fine. I have never visited the one off Wedington, but it is newer, so probably it is as nice or nicer. I’d rather shop NM than Walmart, but they don’t have the selection Walmart has, and I swear sometimes their prices are higher than Walmart’s. Also the checkout lines can get crazy backed-up there.

  • Walmart – Both the MLK and Joyce locations are about the same to me. Joyce is closer, so I go there more often, and it always seems like an ordeal. But sometimes I need the selection, which no place else comes close to matching. We all hate shopping there, but most of us do it anyway at some point.

  • Target – not a serious contender for grocery shopping. Selection is far too small (virtually no fresh produce for example). Price is often not bad, but you have to pay attention, because they sometimes are way out of whack on some stuff.

  • Marvin's Foods on School. Been here only a few times, never for primary shopping. At one point they still had a few hardware isles, which was a trip to see. Last time I was there, it was all grocery store though. Honestly it wasn't as bas as it seems from the outside. But it isn't a convenient location for me, so I never go there. And as I mentioned in another comment, there is a store on college that also used to be branded Marvin's, but has now changed branding (and possible owners, I don't know). Perhaps somebody can review it.
