Growing majority of Britons think Brexit was a mistake, new poll shows

To be honest, he was often quite an entertaining, at times rabble-rousing orator as an MEP and professional thorn-in-the-side in the EU parliament - I say that as a remainer and progressive 'lefty'.

Plus, the challenge in pushing back against all the bollocks from Leave campaigners was Brexit was this big, nebulous unknown; it was quite easy for advocates to dismiss critics as doom-mongers, because they could simply suggest any problems would be dealt with at the negotiating stage. It was never clear what Brexit was actually going to be i.e. if we were going to stay in the single market, if we were going to apply WTO rules etc. It was quite a vague target for critics to take aim at, though plenty tried - and have seen their predictions borne out.

So, I can actually imagine believing Nigel Farage... if I didn't know better. There was a correllation between leave voters and lack of education, as well as age, so ignorance + rose-tinted nostalgia for a bygone, pre-EU Britain was enough to motivate a slim majority of voters.
