I guess I'll be watching a lot more of the Daily Show in the days ahead

Not a vague abstract notion that ducks and weaves any criticisms - I see that as a bait and switch used on the part of theologians, when they're arguing for the existence of god they can drop to this vaguer definition, because it's easier to use these word games to make the idea seem plausible.

It's not a bait and switch or a word game. It's like the Justice or Morality example. Are these things characteristics? Are they dichotomies? Where do they exist? The simplest answer would be anthropomorphic deities being perpetually somewhere, or randomly dropping in on human affairs. That's certainly what Greek civil religion and modern architecture has revolved around them being, but that explanation isn't adequate anymore, but the rest of the conversation still is. There are a lot of people out there that still feel a deep connection to the way ancients talked about them, even if they don't agree with the ancients neatly ordered their deified universe.

Even then, there's something about miracles in the Christian tradition that has been important especially to philosophers that caused Christian theologians very early on to do the unthinkable and reject Platonic supernatural explanations of miracles simply because the ones attributed to Jesus were ones so connected with reality and necessity. It's like Wittgenstein said of miracles could easily be said about how the Christians viewed nature in general if not about Jesus that "A miracle means I have not forgotten about the earth" (or reality, if that suits you better).

Just because we don't have a completely full scientific idea of reality, doesn't mean we have no idea at all.

But even then, what sort of evidence would prove or disprove the supernatural given that Atheists and many Christians can agree we are utterly natural beings with limited senses beyond the material world? There's a sign on the highway near where I live that says there is a supernatural, does that prove it? If Jesus came back today, at what point would people stop looking around him for special effects equipment? Would they be entirely wrong in doing so? Even Jesus himself says that those not disposed to believe in an order higher than themselves would probably not believe even if given evidence.

But it's simply dishonest to tell someone their belief about anything is wrong simply on inductive principles. There's so much we don't know about the Universe, and if we rigorously apply all we know right now we'll probably look as foolish as those Victorian "Archeologists" and "Taxidermists" that now look no better than grave robbers and museum looters for all the damage they did and all the knowledge they lost trying to rigorously apply their presuppositions to learning.

But yes, I'm convinced you can still be a good person without belieiving in God.

No it's just a matter of fact that you don't need to believe in the supernatural to be good, and do good works. The evidence for that is everywhere, denying it is just silly.

The point was the proportionality of it. Martin Luther King and Gandhi physically faced down fully armed modern states with utterly incapable because they believed a Just God who wanted Justice for his people was behind their movements. James Baldwin and Chandra Bose in the very next generation of those respective movements were pragmatic. Baldwin blanched at demonstrations because of the very real threat on his life, and Bose actually joined Hitler and the Japanese estimating this is the only realistic way to accomplish his goals. Baldwin can hardly be faulted, but Bose's actions were certainly wrong on the right motives, and have left a deeply problematic legacy for India.

And maybe also recognising that comments like Noah's really are just plain dumb!

Why do you think I submitted them to a sub called badphilosophy? (The same place I submitted Divine videos?) Because they're the type of comment Christians will deeply not care or feel embarassed by, but like God's Not Dead, the type of thing hyper-offended ratheists will be whining about for years to come.

I honestly hope he makes comments that sloppy when hosting the Daily Show.
