Atheists have been called bastard sons of the church for this reason: they define a god in the exact same way as their nemesis. Example: a devotee imagines god is a purple pony in the sky, or a giant gaseous vertebrate. The non-devotee says, quite reasonably, that it's absurd and there is obviously no purple pony in the sky. The latter then joins with others who naturally come to the conclusion that there is no purple pony in the sky.

They are both still talking about purple ponies. The cognitive model is the same and even originates from the same place.
