I've been trying to work out in a head Cannon idea for an alternate spin on the colonist background.

I was thinking instead of an alliance patrol rescuing John Shepard he's instead rescued by a Qurian who was on their pilgrimage and taking back to the fleet where he discovers he's got a knack for engineering he also be friends a young tali when he turns 18 he sets off on on pilgrimage and decides to join the system alliance military.

I've been debating tying this into a shepard's twin idea where John was living on a colony with their father, well Jane did with their mother on the ship that their mother was serving on.
