Do you guys have any tips for players like myself just getting into the game

The most important advice I can give you is to take your time and know when to take breaks. Warthunder is one of the most frustrating yet rewarding games you'll ever play; know when to log off and take a breather. Also, don't rush; getting from 1.0 to 11.0 requires a few months of constant gameplay at the least.

Don't worry so much about getting to top tier. It may look nice and fancy in youtube videos, but the gameplay and mechanics at top tier is probably the most infuriating part of the game. The issues with CAS/Heli spam, stock grind, night battles without NVD, thermal v. non-thermal tanks, etc. are magnified 10 fold.

Learn the mechanics first. Warthunder has a rather large learning curve due to the amount of controls you have to master. Look at YouTube videos by Oxy, Justinplays, Oddbawz, Phlydaily, etc.
