To you guys making up to 6 figures... what in the world did you do in school to get where you are now?

How to get to 6 figures

1) Negotiate your first salary for your first position. Negotiate your salary for every position. I was able to get 15k over my initial offer at my first job because I told them my peers in similar positions were making even more than that amount. Even though I got my offer bumped significantly, looking back, I wish I asked for more.

2) Be a good worker. Be an approachable peer. No one likes a douche or smartass. Everyone likes the co-worker who asks the right questions, writes down notes for themselves (whether on a computer or on a notebook), and then gives their team unsolicited updates as to the progress of their task on a regular schedule. You need references for future jobs, and being on good terms with your co-workers is your best bet to keep your career going regardless of whether you're switching jobs or staying at the same place.

I've seen good developers not get paid what they deserve because they don't want to go through the hassle of negotiating for that extra 5-10k a year. You owe it to yourself, more specifically, your future self, to do that negotiating.
