Gym Story Saturday

A little late to the game, but I just got back from the gym and have 3 stories for my first gym story Saturday comment.

Dude beside me was doing some burnout sets on the bench press without a spotter. He was on his 5th or 6th and last set when he barely squeezed out a 4th rep. I thought he was done, but like a champ, he kept the bar up, took a few breaths, and went for a 5th rep. Made it half way up and failed. I ran over and grabbed the bar off his chest and racked it for him. He got up and laughed and I think he left. I'm kinda new to the gym, and I've only spotted someone like twice. That was my first time grabbing the weight off someone's chest after going to failure. Felt like a superhero coming to the rescue. Feels good man.

Then when I was leaving the gym at 6:58pm, this dude I've never seen before walked in to work out. A few things to note

  • the gym closed at 7pm (2 minutes later)
  • he looked homeless or something. All grungy, out of control/unkempt beard, wearing cut-off jean shorts and no shirt. you have to wear a shirt.
  • you "sign in" on a sheet of paper with your name, and he just wrote "Captain"
  • you put your bag, keys, etc in a little shelf by the entrance. he set a little rock down on it and nothing else.
  • as I was getting in my car, he walked by, leaving the gym 2 minutes after he arrived.

And also on my way out, this really cute girl I see all the time introduced herself, complimented me on my shoes and shoes/shorts color coordination, and asked me about my workouts. We had a mini conversation in the parking lot. I generally keep to myself, and in an environment that's 90% dudes and 10% women, I don't want to be "that guy" and hit on a girl in the gym. Awesome that she took the initiative, and even awesomer if she's single!
