It's really not that bad, it's just fundamentally a different kind of learning. Learning a language in the same way a child can/does to fluency level as an adult might as well be impossible. A young enough kid put into the right environment can just acquire the language of those around him without any study or direct instruction (like in grammar or something), it just happens. Adults can't do that beyond very basic things, let alone to fluency. But you can absolutely progress much faster than most children do if you study. Kids take years to even be able to form coherent sentences, an adult could do that in a matter of weeks fairly easily.

Getting to native level fluency is another matter though.
