I don't particularly mind America vs Europe comparisons that much. In a lot of ways I can see why that makes sense - people want to compare places with huge populations and large variance in geography, economies and politics. America and Europe are closer on those metrics than America and England for example.

I just balk at the suggestion that the cultural difference between states is comparable to the difference between European countries. It just sounds like the common American habit of assuming Europe is far more homegenous than it is, while thinking America is uniquely exceptional in its variety.

To be fair africa probably gets this the worst from all sides.
