Handwritten inscription on the 2,000lb GBU-31 JDAM [2160×1634]

It's cringe. It's weird. People writing names of dead soldiers on bombs that are designed to kill other people is horrific. I agree.

But guess what? Even the most peaceful societies need to be able to project force to defend themselves. Without that hard outer shell no society can protect its people, its values or its way of life.

People volunteer to undertake that service. They're paid, but they choose to serve the people they grew up with and all the other people they share society with. And if they met you then some would love you. Some would hate you. But they'd go back to work taking fire in deserts, in mountains, on urban street corners, because that's what they do.

Some of those people died in service recently. Whether or not you agree with the mission they were undertaking it with pride despite the natural human fear. Some other people decided to write their names on that most human of things: revenge. If that bomb's getting dropped then people are dying because they are threatening greater peace. Who gives a shit if some people brave enough to serve chose to write the names of other brave people on that bomb?

You, apparently. In my opinion that's just... just head-shakingly blind.
