Happy birthday to Anna Muzychuk, three times female world champion, three times female european champion, fourth woman to cross the 2600 Elo rating

I understand the reasons behind their being Women's only tournaments and Women's only titles, and I somewhat agree with them. But why is it only for women? There are many other groups that are underrepresented at top level chess because the player pool is disproportionately small.

Using the same logic that's given for these Women only things, shouldn't there be tournaments only for Black people and a Black Grand Master title? When I think of the many times I've seen chess depicted in the media the players have always been White or Asian (I'm sure there are some out there with black players, I just haven't seen it). I wouldn't be surprised if there is (or at least was) some systematic racism in chess that has made Black people less incentivised to play. However I feel like introductions of Titles and Segregated tournaments for these other marginalised groups wouldn't be as accepted, probably because we are more inclined to accept the gender segregation because of other sports.

I like the intention behind these tournaments and titles but I'm a bit sceptical of how successful they are at getting more women into chess. Maybe the regulators have that data and can see it works and in that case it would be good to keep it the way it is. I wouldn't be surprised to hear the segregated tournaments encourage more women to play chess because I understand how it could make them feel uncomfortable participating in the non-segregated tournaments. The WGM title I am more sceptical of.

My gut tells me these things, whilst done with the right intention, are a little patronising. But if the majority of the female player base is happy they exist then my opinion isn't really relevant. I'm also aware that they're optional, and that's what makes me in favour of them existing at least until Chess is less sexist and overwhelmingly male. It's good to have that option there for the women who would feel more comfortable in that environment or would like a WGM title.

This is a bit of a ramble on my part, I'm not sure what point I'm trying to make, just sharing my general thoughts.
