Harbingers - Illidan

he's never really been an enemy, hell, one of the main criticisms of TBC was that Illidan did a 180 on his previous behavior (which iirc has been retconned)

basically everything about him is "fuck the legion no matter what", he doesn't give two shits about the Alliance or Horde, but if we want to save Azeroth, then he's happy working with us. and if we get in his way, he'll go THROUGH us just as happily

the problem is, the whole "no matter what" tends to cause a LOT of collateral damage in the process, for example, when he used the skull of gul'dan to try and kill the original lich king before the scourge could be formed, he almost ripped the planet in half

his attempt to re-empower the night elves by making the hyjal well of eternity may have resulted in a beacon for the legion to find Azeroth (though nowadays we know it wouldn't and malfurion was overreacting, Sargeras already knew where Azeroth was after the war of the ancients

taking lady vashj and kaelthas to outland got him some allies, but their heavy-handed attacks against the draenei and naaru resulted in him being targeted by us during TBC

he's a bit like a more competent, less lucky version of Wrathion: at the core, he's a good guy who wants nothing but the best for Azeroth and the destruction of the Legion, but whilst his plans tend to go off fairly well, his intentions are either misinterpreted or an unforseen flaw occurs that constantly puts him in a bad light
